DEFINITION:  An item which may have a cylindrical or other cross-sectional shape,
             with recess areas on the periphery. It is designed to control the flow
             direction in a linear directional control valve by the selection of
             various inlet and outlet ports in a sleeve or the valve body. The
             slide reciprocates thus mating recess areas with the various ports in
             the sleeve or valve body. It may have an off (no flow) position.
